Archive for October, 2008

Actually, I don’t really own him…just the boxed-set of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s famous fictional detective…all 4 novels and 56 short stories.  The first adventure of Sherlock Holmes appeared more than a century ago, it was year 1887.  And I only red that story, A Study In Scarlet, last year and I know that I cannot stop reading until I finish all his adventures.  I can’t remember how long it took me to finish…maybe, roughly less than 2 weeks.  For me, some books are just meant for reading and some are for keeps and re-reading for nth times and two of those books are the Volumes 1 & 2 of Conan Doyle’s very famous creation.  And finally, after more than one year of waiting…I now have the complete collections of stories of Mr. Holmes and his friend Dr. Watson. I heard that Warner Bros. are doing the series of their adventures starring Robert Downey Jr and Jude Law.  I just hope that they will stay true to the original.

ANO NGA BA ANG BREAST CANCER?

Cancer is a disease of the body’s cells.  Breast cancer is a malignant tumor that starts in breast tissue.  There are several types of breast cancer.  They all begin in milk ducts and/or the milk lobules.

SYMPTOMS OF BREAST CANCER

Among 90% of women, breast cancer is first noticed as a lump in the breast.  Here are some signs to be aware of:

*BREAST

- Pagbabago sa hugis or laki ng dibdib

- Dimpling of the skin

- Lump o pangangapal ng breast

*NIPPLE

- Blood-stained discharge (very rare)

- Rash sa nipple or sorrounding area (very rare)

- Nipple becomes inverted (turned in)

- Lump or thickening

*ARM

- Pamamaga sa kili-kili

- Pain in your breast is not usually a symptom of breast cancer.  In fact, many healthy women find their breasts feel lumpy and tender before a period.  Some types of benign breast lumps are painful.

FACTORS THAT CAN INCREASE YOUR RISK

*BEING OLDER

Higit sa kalahati ng mga kababaihang na-diagnose with cancer are over 50.  However, there is an increasing trend of women being diagnosed at an earlier age, particularly during their late 30s or early 40s.

*FAMILY HISTORY

Having a close relative, like a mother, sister or daughter who was diagnosed with breast cancer, can increase your risk.

*NOT HAVING CHILDREN

Mataas ang risk ng pagkakaroon ng breast cancer if a woman does not bear children.

*A LATE FIRST PREGNANCY

Ang isang babae na nabuntis para sa kanyang unang anak in her thirties is 63% more likely to develop breast cancer before menopause and 53% more likely to develop the disease kumpara sa babaeng nagkaroon ng kanyang unang anak at the age of 22.

*BREASTFEEDING

Breastfeeding helps protect against breast cancer.  Habang tumatagal na ang isang babae ay nagbi-breastfeed sa kanyang mga anak, the more she lowers her risk of developing the disease.

*ALCOHOL

Regularly drinking large amounts of alcohol slightly increases the risk of breast cancer.

*PERIODS

Hormones play an important role in the development of breast cancer.  Ang mga babae na nagsimulang magkaroon ng menstruation habang bata pa (before 12) or stop later than usual (after 55) are more likely to develop the disease.

*OVERWEIGHT

Being overweight after menopause increases the risk of breast cancer.  Being 10 kilograms overweight increases the risk by 80%.

*HEREDITARY

A small number of women are at especially high risk because of faulty genes they have inherited.  However, faults in known high-risk breast cancer genes such as BRCA1 and BRCA2 account for fewer than 1 in 20 breast cancer cases.

*RADIATION

Long-term exposure to radiation, or moderate to high levels of exposure, increases the risk of breast cancer.

NOTE:  Men with family history of breast cancer have 1% of having breast cancer.

After being badly and deeply hurt by someone very dear to us…other people around us usually say that it is the Christian-way to forgive the sin committed and the person who wronged us and just move on, that’s the ideal.  But in reality if we get into new arguments some of us become more historical than hysterical.  Yap!  You red it right, we become HISTORICAL…we tend to remember the past and drags up everything.  As C.S. Lewis (of the renowned The Chronicles of Narnia) said “To forgive for the moment is not difficult, but to go on forgiving, to forgive the same offense every time it recurs to the memory -that’s the real tussle.”…I cannot speak for everybody ‘though but only for myself…and it’s true for me.  It’s easy to say ‘I FORGIVE YOU’ but still dwell on the painful past…well, maybe until the day I wake up and everything’s seems fine again…I once red that time heals clean wounds and soiled wounds fester and infect (-Mark McMinn).  As the Holy Bible says in Luke 17:3-4…‘If your brother sins, rebuke him, and if he repents, forgive him.  If he sins against you seven times in a day, and seven times comes back to you and says, ’I repent’ forgive him.’   But the questions are…what if he’s not asking for forgiveness?  Can you just simply forgive him?  They say that forgiveness is something you must earn and forgiveness must come from those who have been wronged.  I red from one booklet that we must identify what has happened and try to answer these four questions: 1)  How serious was the offense? , 2)  How raw is the wound? ,  3)  How close is the person? and  4)  How significant is the relationship to me? .  Forgiveness must not be given for a wrong reason…not even for our desire of quick closure.  As for me, it’s a case to case basis for we must not be too judgemental if others cannot easily forgive especially if we haven’t experienced yet what he went through.  But it’s good for our health if we don’t have too many hang-ups in life.  I can say ‘though that forgiving and forgetting are entirely two different things…for I may forget to remember and remember to forget…or not.

**ANSWER THE FOLLOWING QUESTIONS AND TEST YOURSELF HOW MUCH KNOWLEDGE YOU HAVE ABOUT BREAST CANCER**

**I would like to thank the GROOVE, Team GEK ang Good Evening Kabayan on AM864 for providing the following informations.**

01. Breast cancer can be caused by injuring the breast. TRUE or FALSE?
FALSE.  There is no evidence that a knock or bump to the breast increases the risk of breast cancer.

02. Ang mga babaeng may maliliit na breasts are less likely to get breast cancer. TRUE or FALSE?
FALSE.  Having small breasts does not reduce the risk of getting breast cancer.

03. Breast screening prevents breast cancer. TRUE or FALSE?
FALSE.  Ang breast screening ay ginagawa para mahanap at ma-treat ang breast cancer habang maaga pa but it does not prevent breast cancer.

04. Underwire bras can cause breast cancer. TRUE or FALSE?
FALSE.  May mga taong nagform ng myth na ang bras ay maaaring magtrap ng toxins na maaaring mag-cause ng breast cancer but there is no scientific evidence to prove this claim kaya hindi ito totoo.

05. Deodorant can cause breast cancer. TRUE or FALSE?
FALSE.  Using anti-perspirant may sometimes clog underarm pores. However, there is no current evidence to suggest a link between anti-perspirants and breast cancer.

06. Breast cancer only passes from the mother’s side of the family. TRUE or FALSE?
FALSE.  Totoo na kung ang iyong ina ay may breast cancer, your risk of breast cancer might be higher. Ngunit kung ang may kababaihan sa pamilya ng iyong ama na may breast cancer gaya ng kapatid niyang babae o nanay niya, you’re still at a higher risk.

07. Breast cancer is not a threat until after menopause. TRUE or FALSE?
FALSE.  2,307 women were newly diagnosed in 2005. Sa bilang na ito, 70 o 3% ay nasa 20s and 30s ang edad. Dahil sa hindi ka pa magmemenopause, hindi ibig sabihin na you are not at risk of breast cancer.

08. Nakakahawa ang breast cancer. It can be spread by air, by touch or drinking from the same cup as someone with breast cancer. TRUE or FALSE?
FALSE.  Cancer is not a desease that is transmitted from one person to another. Breast cancer is defined as an abnormal growth in breast cells resulting to a malignant tumor of the breast tissue. Changes in one woman’s cells cannot affect the cells of another woman.
09. Stress causes breast cancer. TRUE or FALSE?
FALSE.  Studies have failed to find any evidence that people who tend to be anxious or stressed are any more likely to develop breast cancer than people who are relaxed.

10. If you have breast cancer, you will probably die. TRUE or FALSE?
FALSE. While breast cancer is the third leading cause of cancer deaths in women (after lung and colon cancer), the vast majority of women who were diagnosed with breast cancer five years ago are still alive.

11. A mammogram prevents breast cancer. TRUE or FALSE?
FALSE.  A mammogram cannot prevent breast cancer. It is just a tool to screen for and detect the desease at an early stage.

12. A mammogram causes breast cancer. TRUE or FALSE?
FALSE.  A mammogram is a safe procedure that uses extremely low levels of radiation to create detailed images of the breast. There are quality standards to assure that mammography systems are safe and use the lowest dose of radiation possible.

It was early morning today (15th of October, 2008) when I was asked by a young girl if I can make a simple parachute for her. At first I was hesitant for I know ‘though it seems a simple favor and task to ask from me but , honestly, i never made a parachute before. During my childhood i made few pieces of simple saranggolas and most of them are boka-bokas but never a parachute.
So what I did was I sent Kuya Ogo an IM asking for help…
ME:Good morning Kuya Go! HELP!
After few minutes he sent again a message…
OGO:Musta na ang parachute mo? Sorry nawalan ako ng signal.
ME:Ngayon ko pa lang ginagawa. Nawa effective, hehehe!
ME:Hahaha…I need to apply physics.
OGO:Aba! Meron ka pang ganoon doktora? Okey do what you need to do and apply your physics.
ME:Hahaha! Wala nagpapa-impress lang ako sa iyo, hehehe!
OGO: I’m so impressed!
After I finished the parachute I gave the young girl some instructions about the parachute I made…about the strings and the weight.   I told the girl that after throwing the parachute skyward it will fall slowly and most likely all the four strings will become entangled together and with the weight that I used.  I reminded her when it happens she doesn’t need to be impatient and all she needs to do is slowly sort out the four strings and just be more careful that she might break the strings or might cut her skin from the strings.
As I explained stuffs to her I suddenly realized the connections of that parachute to my life.  You see, maybe some of us are very good in giving advices to other people but the truth is we, ourselves, are not keen in following our own advices.  I co-relate my old self to that parachute…before, when I’m going through tough times I tend to be impatient.  I want everything to be well again according to my plans and I don’t want any hassles in life…instead of patiently sorting out the strings I have this urge to just pull them in every directions until I will suddenly realize that they become more entangled and I cannot do anything about them but to sever them.
My previous life was like that…if I have a problem I want an immediate solution.  I cannot wait for later…what I want is NOW.  I made some bad judgements then because of that attitude…some can be neglected but some I deeply regret up to this moment.  I’m not saying that I am a better person now because that is bragging but I think I improved a lot.  Now, as much as I want immediate solutions for my worries (who doesn’t?) but I’m learning also the value of patience and most of all by surrendering everything to Him, Who gave us our life.  Yes, in His time, it may take some time for all the things in my life to be well again but I guess I cannot complain much because I know a lot of people are having tougher lives and bigger problems compared to mine.  As Kuya Ogo reminded me…we are free to choose which path to take…the decisions to make.  It’s really all up to us if we will take the narrow or wide road but one thing is for sure if we will always make the conscious effort to do what our Creator intend us to do we will never go astray.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY MA! I LOVE YOU…WE LOVE YOU!!! ALL THE BESTS IN US WE OWE TO YOU & PAPU.

yap! using this title for this post may not have the serious implications i want to convey but honestly! you must get used to me and the way i talk and write, in this case. last october 1… i went, with friends, to kinetics medical clinic to participate with our church’s activity…it’s conquer-hepatitis-day for us!!! and after extensive research…err, reading from the leaflet the clinic’s staff gave us here are some important infos you might like to know between hepa A and B:

HEPATITIS A

*MODE OF TRANSMISSION: intake of contaminated food or water; person-to-person direct transmission

*SYMPTOMS: severity varies with the individual: include fever, loss of appetite, weight loss, physical weakness, vomiting, headache, muscle aches. in severe cases: jaundice, tea-coloured urine, etc.

*LONG-TERM IMPACT: children and young patients can recover automatically without any long-term impact. the convalescent period takes months and some patients can suffer from relapses. in severe cases, patients may be hospitalized for weeks.

*VACCINATION SCHEDULE: first shot-on any designated day; second shot-six to twelve months after the first shot

HEPATITIS B

*MODE OF TRANSMISSION: mother-to-infant transmission at or around the time of delivery; blood contact; sexual contact

*SYMPTOMS: similar to hepatitis A

*LONG-TERM IMPACT: five percent of people infected with hepatitis B will become chronic carriers, of which one-fourth will finally die of liver cancer or cirrhosis.

* VACCINATION SCHEDULE: first shot-on any designated day; second shot-one month after the first shot, third shot-six months after the first shot

and if you are wondering what were the findings of my rapid blood test for hepa B antigen and antibody..well, it’s really confidential you know but the vaccination didn’t hurt me…only just my wallet, hahaha!
